When a woman enters perimenopause usually in her 40’s she may experience mood swings. This is because estrogen levels start to fluctuate up and down and will continue until she reaches menopause.
You may start to cry for no reason, or become angry at the smallest irritation. It can really affect your life. You may even think you’ve gone crazy. Well, there is an explanation for these moods changes.
In perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone hormones become unbalanced. Estrogen plays a huge role in many of our body’s functions. It controls the brain chemical serotonin which makes us feel good. When estrogen levels are low, so is our serotonin level. It’s easy to see that fluctuating estrogen will make our moods swing up and down.
Not everyone reacts the same. Some women who have always been positive about life may be able to laugh off these mood swings. Other women who have suffered from depression earlier in life may have a difficult time controlling their moods. They are risk for becoming depressed again.
There are some simple things that you can do to calm your mood. You must feed your brain the nutrients it requires. Making sure your diet contains foods rich in Vitamin B is essential. Also include Vitamins C, E and A in your diet or take them as a supplement.
Exercise is probably the most important remedy for feeling blue. Take a walk, try a dance class or yoga class. Any exercise that increases your heart rate will improve your mood. Talk to a friend or family member about your mood swings. They will want to support you through this time.
Once perimenopause ends and you reach menopause (which is once you’ve been without a period for 12 months), you will notice that the moods will even out and you’ll feel more like yourself again.
