It’s easy to discuss who is to blame for obesity but it is harder to no blame an individual. We are quick to look down upon those who are overweight and think they are weak and lazy. In reality we all have our own vices and reasons behind them. People who suffer from obesity are no different.
Depression: If you are fighting sadness overeating can be a sign. Food tastes good and you feel good when you eat it. If you are depressed and want to feel better you will eat more to feel good for a time. You may feel bad about gaining weight but the only thing that makes you feel good is food.
Control: You may not see it but if your life is out of control then what you eat can be a controlling factor. You are in the repetition of being in control about something in your life when you cannot control anything else. This behavior can swing the other way to anorexia as well as other eating disorders.
Learned behavior: If you come from a family where a big bowl of ice cream is the norm before you go to bed and most of your family is overweight it is a learned behavior. It is nobody’s ‘fault’ per say it is just how your family has learned to eat on a regular basis.
Protection: People who have suffered from being abused sexually many times hide under weight. They can be hurting so much and feeding that pain with food. They can also feel more confident no will mess with them if they are overweight, thus feeling protected.
It is easy to blame obesity on various factors but knowing the source of issues that are the core of the ‘why’ you can begin to work on those issues. If you can find these sources then it will help you why you go for certain behavioral patterns to over eat. If you have a desire to lose weight these issues may present themselves later and you can deal with them. Just don’t give up and strive for a better life and feel good about yourself.
