Health Coach Tips – Healthy Remedies For the Holidays

There is a constant debate regarding the use of home remedies to heal and prevent naturally occurring colds. The fact is, our traditional western diet and lifestyle has us in a state of constant deficiency. Natural remedies approved by a health coach are a way to supplement the vitamins and minerals we need to put our bodies back in balance. Whether they prevent the illness, sooth it or minimize the symptoms here are some home remedies to help you and your children fight back against the cold this holiday season.

Vitamin D – A number of children aren’t getting enough of this vitamin. While it’s readily available in the summer, there is less exposure to the natural sunlight in the winter which can create a deficiency. Supplements and Vitamin D fortified foods can help restore balance and prevent colds thanks to its infection-fighting capabilities.

Probiotics – Bacteria found in foods like yogurt and kefir can help prevent upper respiratory infections. This is more of a maintenance supplement than a cure for an existing cold. It’s best to include foods in the diet of your children that contain probiotics so they gain the constant benefit.

Sleep – There is some real healing power in sleep, and many children don’t get enough, especially after school starts. If they’re up late tackling homework, playing late (video games), watching movies or just keeping poor hours then it can easily upset their cycle which disrupts the immune system’s ability to function. Sleep can help prevent colds and other illnesses and it’s also vital to recovery when a child becomes ill.

Salt – Salt has an anti-inflammatory property that can help mucus release and it can help to improve breathing function in this manner. When taken on a regular basis, tests have proven that a saline (salt) flush of the sinuses and nose can help reduce the bacteria count through cleansing and thereby reduce the number of illness onsets.

Honey – Honey is a great way to coat the throat in situations where a cold has brought on severe coughing. It can provide more comfort and soothing than typical over the counter cough medications for a longer period of time. Be mindful not to give it to children under the age of 1.

Chicken Soup – Specifically the broth, but the vegetables in chicken soup are beneficial as well. It’s the go to meal for illnesses for a reason. Research has shown that the ingredients in chicken soup have anti-inflammatory properties that help release mucus and clear the airways to reduce congestion.

This list isn’t just a common endorsement by a health coach, these are remedies that are used by parents on a daily basis to help bring relief to their families and aid in the prevention of future onsets. When these methods are combined with an improved diet, exercises and a keen understanding of natural health you’ll start to see fewer periods of illness for you and your family.
