Cloudy urine and prostatitis often go hand-in-hand. Prostatitis is a bacterial infection of the prostate gland. The prostate is a small gland located just below the bladder in men. This gland surrounds the urethra, which is a small tube that allows urine to drain from the bladder. Like any other organ in the body, it is possible for the prostate to become infected. There are several causes for these infections, the most common being bacteria. Some sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia, can cause prostatitis.
Prostate glands that are infected become become inflamed and very tender. The infection and subsequent inflammation will cause a variety of symptoms, including production of cloudy urine. The most common bacteria involved in prostatitis are E. coli and pseudomonas. Prostatitis infection usually begins with the bacteria traveling up the urethra, and settling in the prostate gland. Acute prostatitis will cause all of the symptoms listed above. In addition, the inflammation can cause a prostate to swell to such a degree that it obstructs the urethra, causing a urinary outflow obstruction. This can lead to inappropriate retention of the urine within the bladder. Obviously, if this happens, you are unlikely to experience cloudy urine.
Treatment for acute prostatitis involves isolating the bacteria which is causing the infection, and treating it with antibiotics. In cases of severe infection, it is possible that a short hospitalization may be necessary in order to introduce antibiotics via an IV line. Once the patient’s fever has subsided, it is possible to switch the patient to oral antibiotics. This therapy can last for up to a month, as infections of the prostate can be quite difficult to treat. Cloudy urine and prostatitis will typically resolve at the same time once the infection is properly dealt with.
It’s important to understand that cloudy urine has many causes, of which prostatitis is only one. If you have cloudy urine, it’s most likely from another cause, such as something you ate.
