Every man at some point in his life is going to start losing hair. Some men start struggling with this as early as their teens or twenties, even. More frequently, men in their forties and fifties start to experience hair loss.
Because hair loss is so common as men age, it is seen as a sign of being old. This leads to social stigma. Because of this many men try various treatments to see if they can regrow their hair.
Not all hair loss is caused by aging, though. Some diseases and medical treatments can also lead to hair loss.
Cancer is the most well known of these diseases, but it is far from the only one. Hair loss is not uncommon after even minor diseases or minor surgery. You can also lose hair as a side effect of taking medicine, such as some antidepressants.
If you are losing your hair, you are likely hoping for a miracle cure. Unfortunately, there isn’t one.
There are several common treatments, however. One popular treatment is topical cream that is applied to the scalp, such as Rogaine. These creams, widely available in pharmacies, do make hair regrow. They also make your scalp itch. Plus you have to continue using them or they stop working and you start losing hair again. This will end up being very expensive over time.
The more budget-conscious sometimes opt for an oral medication such as Propecia. These medicines do work, but only for half of the patients who try them. They also have to be taken for as long as you want to maintain the hair; if you stop taking them, hair loss will resume.
For other people, changes in lifestyle can stop or even reverse hair loss. Eating less fat, and avoiding stress, are two techniques that some have found beneficial.
In fact, work-related stress is a very frequent cause of hair loss. Reducing stress is one of the most effective hair loss treatments around. Why not take a week’s restful vacation and see if that doesn’t make a difference, before spending a bunch of money on prescription medicines you’ll need to be on forever?
