Doctors talk about our body mass index when they refer to weight issues. We’re considered healthy if our BMI is between 18.5 and 25. Above twenty five, and we have a problem with our weight. What’s more if we take that figure over thirty we’re defined as obese – over forty and the definition is morbidly obese.
It’s very easy to determine what your BMI is: Take your height in metres and your weight in kilos. Multiply your height by itself and then divide your weight by the answer.
So your figures might look something like this: You’re 1.45m tall (1.45 x 1.45 = 2.10). Your weight is 68 kilograms (68 / 2.10 = 32.38). Those numbers would show you’re in the obesity category, which would certainly mean a change of habits is needed.
Generally, a reduction in the amount of high fat food will get the weight-loss ball rolling. It’s important that we reduce our portions and convert to healthier options.
You’ll just feel unwell though if you plunge straight into a crash diet – and they rarely work long-term. This rules out anything that suggests you consume less than twelve hundred calories in 24 hours. Such ‘instant remedies’ may produce some results, but it’s likely the weight will flood back on.
There are no short- cuts to long-term healthy weight loss. Trimming a few hundred cals a day off what you currently eat will take a few pounds off each month. This won’t drop two dress sizes in a month, but it could well keep you two sizes down 12 months from now.
It’s well understood that foods saturated in fat contain the highest calories. It makes sense therefore to drastically reduce that type of food. To stay satiated, eat more grains, and enjoy liberal amounts of veg and fresh fruit. It’s amazing how quickly you’ll start to notice improvements in your health.
It may seem like a good idea to skip a meal, but it isn’t. Over the day as a whole, you’re likely to consume more in snacks to compensate for your hunger. A number of lighter meals throughout the day is better in reality. It’s more difficult to get the weight off when you feel half-starved. Your body can metabolise more productively when it knows it’s receiving small regular intakes of fuel. This allows it to get rid of excess fat more easily.
