I know that you might have decided to try one of those “great” no carb diets. If that is the case, then you might want to rethink your decision. Diets extremely low in carbohydrates can cause many health problems, three of which this article is going to focus on.

No carb diets promote cholesterol. If you’re not eating any carbohydrates, then you must get your calories from protein or fat. Dietary fat will increase your levels of cholesterol. High levels of cholesterol are linked with heart disease, and the correlation between the two is very strong. In other words, if you consume more fats, you are likely to increase your chances of getting heart disease. No amount of weight loss is worth contracting heart disease, and heart disease is a major killer in the United States.

No carb diets also promote osteoporosis. It is a fact that great amounts of protein in the body promote the excretion of calcium. Calcium is a mineral which is necessary to maintain bone density. Without sufficient quantities of calcium, we cannot maintain strong and healthy bones, and without strong and healthy bones we are more likely to fracture our bones. This is especially a problem in areas such as the hips, because the fractures can be devastating. So in order to preserve the integrity of your bones, it is not recommended that you start a no carb diet.

No carb diets also promote kidney damage. Excessive amounts of protein in the body can cause damage to the kidneys. This is a long standing observation; ingesting enormous amounts of protein greatly increases the possibility that you will damage your kidneys. Kidney disease is a terrible thing, and you do not want to increase your risk of contracting it. So go slow on the proteins, and don’t worry too much about consuming too many carbohydrates relative to the rest of the foods in your diet. It’s the calories that count, not the carbs.

Besides the above-stated main reasons why you shouldn’t go the no carb route, there is one additional reason: saturated fat. People on no carb diets have almost no choice but to ingest significant quantities of saturated fat, and this same saturated fat does a number on their arteries. Arteries are important because of the role they play in helping blood circulate throughout the body. Saturated fat clogs arteries and contributes to a number of health problems, including male sexual dysfunction.

So just be wise and do not play around with no carb diets. They’re not worth it, and they carry with them a risk of health problems too serious to ignore.
