5 Ways To Deal With An Injury

If you exercise with a high frequency, it can be very hard to distinguish between a small injury and a serious injury. To further complicate matters, the wrong management approach can turn a small injury into a serious one.

So here is how to deal with an injury when trying to get toned:

1. Don’t work through the pain: If you feel sudden pain stop everything you are doing. Many injuries can be contained with this simple, yet aggressive approach. If you adopt a no pain no gain attitude towards injuries, you can potentially alter your body forever.

2. Use cold to decrease swelling: Not only is swelling painful, but it can release substances which break down cartilage and it can block blood from reaching the injured tissue. And blood is critical for repair since it carries all nutrients throughout your body.

3. Heat it: A good approach is to combine heat with cold. Cold reduces swelling, heat loosens up the tissues and increases blood flow. Use heat after you have used cold. A good amount is to use each one for about 20 minutes.

4. Elevate the limb if necessary: If you feel that the injury is still creating a high amount of pain, you can elevate the limb which will further prevent swelling. Obviously this approach creates the most inconvenience, but it’s worth doing if you suspect a serious insult to your body.

5. See a sports medicine specialist: I recommend being really aggressive here. If you are not sure about the severity of your injury, don’t hesitate to make an appointment. It’s infinitely better to catch something sooner rather than later. Because later usually means the treatment is going to be far more involved.

A large amount of exercise injuries are minor. And because they are neglected and not babied, they end up turning into much more serious conditions. Do not fall into this trap and act on the information in this article without delay!
