It is very evident with our society today, that organic foods are becoming more and more popular among the people. This is due to people’s cravings for healthier and more satisfied lifestyle. Furthermore, more and more people are becoming more conscious to the food they are eating and the toxins that they might ingest for eating non-organic foods. However, not all people have the luxury to supply themselves with organic foods as it is already know to everybody that organic foods are a bit expensive and not all countries have the money to support this kind of farming. By saying organic, you also mean natural. Natural goods are free from any harmful chemicals that may come from cheap and most often use pesticides, herbicides and insecticides. This goes also for the livestock.
Organically raised livestock should not be injected with any chemically prone antibiotics and vitamins in order to come up with a greater quality meat. However, one of the most common misconceptions of people is that organic foods are a hundred percent free from pesticides, fertilizers or antibiotics for that matter. It could still be used given that it contains safer materials.
Organic food is way better for everyone and their family. The organic foods have more vitamins, enzymes, minerals and it tastes far better than intensively farmed produce. It is also free from pesticides, insecticides, growth hormones, fertilizers, antibiotics and a lot of other toxic artificial flavorings, additives, preservatives and colorings. So the question is why do the organic foods cost more if it has less added chemicals?
Of the many reasons why commercially produced farm foods are sold cheaper is because these are subsidized by taxes paid by the citizens. The subsidy and support from the government are mostly poured into agrochemical agriculture whereas organic farming is left to fend on its own since no subsidy goes to it.
There are many things that organic farmers can not use and some of these are the sewage sludge and chemical fertilizers which are both very cheap to buy and much easier to transport. What organic farmers can use as fertilizers are compost and animal manure which are not only very bulky and inconvenient to transfer but also expensive.
Also, organic farmers have to practice crop rotation in their farm in order to maintain the good composition of their soil as against commercial farmers who can use every piece of their land to grow the crops that can yield the highest price. Organic farmers have to contain themselves to less earning brought about by having to rotate crops and fields to allow their soil to recover. Through crop rotation, organic farmers cannot always grow the high value crops even if they want to unlike the conventional system that can grow these high value crops harvest after harvest. The organic fertilizers that are used by the organic farmers also cost twice as much as those used by commercial farmers.
All these reasons mentioned are why organic foods are not readily available to everyone. To put simply, organic farming is more expensive than the regular farming that we are accustomed to. The expensive price can be afforded by the rich people but the poor are left with no access to these kinds of food. It is indeed a very sad reality. Hopefully, as the popularity of organic food increases, the government may one day give a solution on how to make these organic foods available to everyone.
