Everybody wants a slice of the fitness pie. After all, there is a lot of money to be made selling “healthy” foods geared towards fitness minded people.
Now since there is so much money to be made, the market is inundated with myriad products. Unfortunately, this has reached such an extreme that many products being promoted as healthy aren’t healthy by any stretch of the imagination.
So here are some common health foods that aren’t healthy:
1. Fancy juices: How convenient it is to simply start drinking some juice while thinking that you are doing something good for your health. Unfortunately, most juices are simply sugar-laden anti-oxidant-stripped formulations. You are much better off sticking with fruits.
2. Energy pills: You see, energy pills stimulate your sympathetic nervous system, the part of your body responsible for fight or flight responses. And when you over stimulate this system with energy pills, you can end up with adrenal fatigue or chronic fatigue. As a side note, energy pills are very harsh on your digestive system.
3. Flintstone pills: If you are going to take a multivitamin as recommended by the Harvard school of public health, make sure it has no more than 100% of the recommended daily intake for any given nutrient. Anything greater and you run the risk of toxicity.
4. Boxed cereal that looks nice: Cereals are heavily promoted to children and this is very unfortunate for us as a society. You see, cereals are simply full of sugar-the last thing you want in your diet. In fact, multiple studies have shown that when athletes eat slower digesting sources of food versus cereal, they perform better and don’t get tired as quickly.
5. Sugar sticks: By sugar sticks I mean energy bars. You see, most energy bars are simply sticks of sugar. Just read the label and the nutrition facts and you will see for yourself what I’m talking about. While convenient, make sure you don’t fall prey to the sexy advertising.
If you really want to maximize your health, stick to whole foods which have the most bio-available forms of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The above foods can simply not compete with the power of natural food.
