Organic foods is very safe to eat and healthy not just in our body but also in environment. It is free from harmful chemicals and toxins that may affect us in the future if consume. It also boosts our immunity system. But with all the benefits of organic foods, one of the main reasons why the demand is very low is that it is very expensive. Even the demands from those people who want to eat organic foods aren’t enough to lessen the cost of the organic foods.
You can find many reasons why it still remains expensive than those which are not organic. One of the reasons includes the fact that farmers exert more effort and care in cultivating and producing organic foods. Also, farmers of organic foods take advantage of the positive reputation of organic foods to sell it at a higher price.
With regards to the number or quantity of organic foods that a farmer can harvest, you can clearly see its difference compared to non-organic plants. Production of organic foods is often lower than those of non-organic. Moreover, by making your own kind of pesticides which usually involve all natural products also, you can expect more effort and cost from the farmers side. Hence, this tremendous hard work on cultivating organic foods is one of the reasons why it is priced higher.
Another reason believed to contribute to the high price of organic food is that organic farmers are not receiving any subsidy from the government whereas commercial farming gets a lot of support and funding from people’s taxes. Organic farmers also cannot use either chemical fertilizers or sewage sludge which is way much cheaper to buy and transport to their farm. As a consequence of this, organic farmers need to use compost and animal manure as a fertilizer to their soil. These naturally produced fertilizers are very bulky and more expensive to use.
The law of supply and demand is also one reason why organic foods are expensive. Organic food growers take advantage of the fact that there is a high demand for organic food. Although there are many people trying their hands at growing organic food, only a few farmers are producing at greater quantities. The competition that this creates raises the price of organic foods to a much higher price that they should be sold.
Also, the small number that is yield means the farmers have to sell it in higher price. As the organic foods produces small numbers of crops than conventional foods while the transport and packaging costs is the same as the conventional foods, this gives the retailers the reason to put it to a higher price. As there are fewer numbers of organic foods, the expense allocated to each crop is higher than that of conventional foods.
Since organic farming require a lot of effort compared to conventional farming, it’s very reasonable for organic farmers to sell their crops at a higher price to consumers. Should the demand for organic food increases, it is expected to get the attention of the government so that the much needed subsidy will be provided to eventually bring down the cost of organic foods.
