In the United States today, obesity has become an epidemic. Currently more than 190 million American’s, two thirds of the population, is considered overweight. That is a staggering amount of fat people. What’s even more staggering is the price of treating obese related diseases. Over a $147 billion dollars a year is spent on treating diseases related to treating obesity. It has become now even more important than ever to know what factors contribute to gaining weight and how we can help those that are overweight lose it.
Now we must delve into some common reasons why we overeat and how we can deal with these temptations.
America is a technically advanced society and yet it is also one of the most overweight in the world. So lets look closer at our environment and how it contributes to obesity. Do to the fact that we are an advanced nation, food is not scarce. In fact, food is abundant. Another factor is that food is relatively cheap and easy to acquire. So what specifically are we getting at with these two factors? Well there are businesses that make use of food that is cheap and abundant. Fast food restaurants. Fast food meals are often cheap and of low nutritional value. They are also loaded with sodium which makes you even hungrier. So one way that we as a nation can lose weight fast would be to cut down or cut out entirely fast food.
Something else to look out for is that you don’t emotional eat. Feelings of anger or boredom or sadness can cause some people to eat food when their not even hungry. They do this because eating can cause feelings of pleasure that help these people deal with their problems. However, this pleasure is most always short lived and leads to worse problems down the road. Instead of eating to feel better, go out and get some exercise. It is a known fact that exercise releases powerful opiates in your body that give the felling of euphoria and pleasure and it will also help you stay in shape and have an overall more positive influence on how you view yourself.
Another factor that is often overlooked is the amount of sleep you get each night. Health practitioners recommend that people get six to eight hours of sleep each and every night. However, the reality is that the majority of Americans skimp by on much less. A hormone called leptin makes you feel full. However, when you don’t get enough sleep, another hormone is produced called gherlin. This hormone causes hunger which makes you overeat. This is why it is very important that you get enough sleep.
Taking into consideration these factors and making the necessary changes to your lifestyle can really jumpstart your journey to weight loss.
