Is fat necessary? That’s like asking “Is crime necessary?” or “Is it necessary to be fat?” The action of asking by itself already seems bad, like asking “How often do you beat your wife?” Of course, to all of these questions the answer is no.
Is fat essential in a healthy diet? Some nutritionists and scientists have suggested that a small amount of fatty acids or components of certain fats are important for health. This has never been proven for humans, although it has been concluded to be true for rats. There is no way to debate the fact that many millions of people living in Asia, Africa, South America and many other places have no fat in their diet. Regardless, they live a normal life span and sometimes even longer: their physical or nutritional development is often actually better than people who consume lots of fat, such as the average American fat dietary intake.
By now, it’s very clear that these people who consume low-fat or fat-free diets practically do not suffer from heart attacks and strokes, which widely affect people who have fat in their diets. A subject of curiosity is whether the Eskimos have a high rate of heart attacks and strokes since their diets incorporate a large amount of fat. First of all, it should be noted that the Eskimo days no longer exist on blubber and whale alone. Several years ago, physicians working with the National Geographic Society found that the Eskimos who lived in more modern areas ate and carried a lifestyle similar to other Canadians or Americans in country villages were affected just the same by atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, and heart conditions.
On the other hand, in those Eskimo cases where fish and whale fats constituted the basis of the diet, blood tests revealed that cholesterol and fats in the blood were very low. This surprising fact was later found to be due to the high concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids in the large amount of fish and whale oils consumed by these Eskimos.
These unsaturated fatty acids have the unique power to lower the blood levels of cholesterol and other fats, thus protecting the Eskimos from the complications of atherosclerosis in the heart, brain, kidneys, and other organs.
