The Argument Between Organic And Conventional Farming Practices

It can be hard for consumers to judge the hype over organic foods. Are these more expensive products really better for your health, or is this another marketing campaign to make us spend more money? There are certainly people on both sides of the issue and depending on who you ask, you’re likely to get a different response. There are health nuts who swear by it and others who simply dismiss it as nothing more than a ploy.

The debate will likely continue for some time as to whether or not organic foods are truly superior then their conventional counterparts, but there is evidence of the health benefits of eating more organic foods.

Organic foods are not only better for your health, they are better for the environment as well. Organic farmers must use sustainable farming practices, which does not destroy natural resources the way that conventional farming practices sometimes do.

It is easy to grab the conventional products because it seems like we are saving, and these days we must all be careful with our money. But the conventional products are actually more costly to us over a lifetime. There are the obvious medical expenses we may have to worry about if our body develops unexpected conditions as a result of our food choices, but there’s also the impact on the environment. The cost to our environment is one that our children will continue to pay long after we are gone, and if you are worried about health care costs, wouldn’t it be better to spend a bit more eating better foods now then spending your money on health care later?

The FDA has banned many pesticides, yet other known carcinogens remain common ways to treat conventional fruits and vegetables. Not only are carcinogens used to treat the conventional produce you eat, but many conventional crops have been genetically engineered, and we may not yet know the true health impacts of genetically engineered food.

These contaminants can’t be good for the human body.

If you can’t buy all organic food, at least make organic selections when purchasing produce that is known to get sprayed with lots of pesticides, like strawberries.

Organic foods may cost a bit more now, but it is easy to see how not eating all those chemicals found in conventional foods may be worth it!
