It all began to take hold a couple of decades back, and in the years since then medical tourism for cheap plastic surgery has only continued to expand in popularity. It allows people to travel to exotic locations while at the same time get some cosmetic surgery work done, and it does have some very good selling points.
The common reasons for people taking the medical travel route to cheap plastic surgery are in fact quite a few, but buy far the most popular one mentioned is cost. This is because in virtually all third world countries like India, Korea, Thailand, and Costa Rica, all medical care runs at about 20% to 30% of what you would pay back home.
So then what’s the real story because as you may already know, if a deal sounds too good to be true in most cases it usually is. The simple answer to that question is that there are in deed some great deals to be had on cheap plastic surgery at quality clinics that are up to western standards, but you do have to beware.
You see an important thing to realize, is that none of the so called third world countries where these deals are coming from have an agency similar to the FDA in the U.S. Now they might have some type of health bureau, but it’s usually some weak, understaffed, and underfunded agency that has little to no authority that clinics can bribe anyway.
So this all adds up to one thing and that is that the onus is entirely on you to do the necessary research before you sign on to any deal, and hop on a plane to some far flung destination. Also do bear in mind that as you check out any of these offers, you will of course need to talk to previous patients who have already had work done by them because you would be a fool to go strictly on the word of overseas clinic operators.
Just one more fact that you simply can’t afford to fail to take into account, is that if any type of neglect or malpractice becomes an issue, you have very little legal recourse in most cases. The problem you see, is that third world courthouses are basically dens of corruption where justice is openly for sale, and besides many of these clinics don’t have adequate insurance anyway.
One final bit of advice, is that you have to keep in mind that western tourists are always the preferred target for con artists, and rip offs in third world destinations. Be wary of people who seem overly friendly, keep in mind that in Latin America if they speak fluent English, it’s most likely because they have been through the American prison system, and got deported. Also remember that cops have to be bribed to get any help from them if you do become a victim.
