Everybody has troubles. But some can float through problems with a good mental attitude and faith in the future. Others get mired down in minor troubles, and so they always seem sad. A good attitude, plans for the future, and control of your reactions can make your life much more pleasant.
Optimistic individuals are not happy because they have always been able to avoid problems. They just understand they cannot control everything and everybody, and that the only thing they have a chance to control is their own reactions.
Everything cannot be held under control. This is true. But the one thing that we do have control over is our reaction to negative situations. In fact, a happy person has probably realized that this is the only thing they really have under control.
Consider an example. Have you ever watched the news and seen families react to some tragedy in their lives. Consider how two different people react to the loss of their home in a flood.
The first family may be lamenting their loss with no thought of the future. Nobody can question this reaction. It would be very upsetting to lose a home and many things that will never be replaced.
Another family may have a very different reaction to a similar loss. They are sad because of the valuable things they lost. But they are also glad because their loved ones are all safe and comfortable now. They are safe and comfortable for today, and they know they can work to make the situation even better tomorrow. They are also expressing relief because their community or family has stepped forward to help them.
Anybody would be very upset if he or she lost a home or had some other big problem. But people really can do themself a favor by trying to develop an attitude by thinking about what is going right with their lives, and also by figuring out what they can do to make tomorrow better!
