It is difficult to find a definition of hypnosis that everyone agrees on due to the diverse background, types of hypnotists and therapists. This is why I am going to give you several definitions.
William Broom of the Hypnotherapy Standards Council defines hypnosis as: “Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by mental and physical relaxation, in which our sub-conscious communicates with our conscious mind. It is widely accepted as a most efficient and quite excellent method through which we can access our inner potential. The state of mind referred to may be brought about either by oneself, unaided (self-hypnosis) or with the help of another person.”
From Krasner, A.M. The Wizard Within: ABH PRESS, 1990/1991: Hypnosis is “a process which produces relaxation, distraction of the conscious mind, heightened suggestibility and increased awareness, allowing access to the subconscious mind through imagination. It also produces the ability to experience thoughts and images as real.”
Ph.D Eric Greenleaf has been quoted as saying this about hypnotism: The notion of hypnosis is to help a person, by focusing and searching inwardly, to utilize all his learning and skills to resolve his problems, and to do so with the aid of unconscious learning and understanding. What scientists do when they “dream up” inventions and theories, what statesmen do when they “sleep on it” before solving problems of state, what athletes do preparing for a match by “visualizing” the flight of the ballthis is the sort of thing hypnotized persons do to apply themselves to difficult problems of living.
Base upon respect all mankind, hypnosis takes into account our experiences and everything that makes us who we are. There are a myriad of things we can experience in a hypnotic trance such as reduced pain, improved self awareness, strong emotions, remembering or forgetting, improved creativity and many other feelings and emotions.
The phenomena called healing by trance state is found in virtually all cultures on earth and is one of the oldest phenomena known to mankind.
Can you lose weight and keep it off with the help of hypnosis? This is a question that has been asked by many.
Judge for yourself based on the answer below.
There has been much research done on this and they have found a dramatic effect on weight loss through hypnotism.
After a 9 week study using 2 weight loss groups, 1 using hypnosis and the other not using hypnosis. The group that used hypnosis continued to get positive results up to 2 years after, while the other group showed no further improvement after the end of the study. This was published in the journal of clinical psychology in 1985.
