It is not a mystery that exercise is a necessary component of any realistic weight loss plan. A form of exercise that is frequently overlooked, but is effective and enjoyable, is dance. Dancing is a fantastic way to achieve quick weight loss. Here are some statistics:
Belly Dancing can burn between 250 to 300 calories an hour depending on how vigorous you move.
Salsa and cumbia (my favorite) dancing is great fun and burns about 400 calories an hour.
Ballroom dancing – tango, foxtrot, twostep, waltz – can burn between 180 to 480 calories an hour depending on which dance you are doing. This is another great weight to achieve rapid weight loss.
Ballet can consume about two hundred calories per hour.
Rock and Roll; Hip-Hop; and Afro-Jazz can burn between 100 to 400 calories an hour.
Line dancing can utilize as much as six hundred calories per hour of constant motion.
A great example of how you can lose weight with dance is country music start Scooter Lee. in early 2001, her physician admonished her, by telling her that if she did not begin losing weight she was likely to have a myocardial infarction. She was extremely overweight, weighing in at about 300 pounds! She was also suffering from breast and skin cancer, uterine cancer, and not surprisingly, was severely depressed.
Her music was very popular, and she won many awards, such as the prestigious Country Dance Artist of the Year. Many of her songs were well suited for line dancing, but at the time she did not line dance herself!
Thankfully, she followed her doctor’s advice and began to line dance, alter her diet, and improve her health.
Even though some of the damage to her body due to her obesity was not reversible, she lost 140 pounds in four years and improved her health.
As a result, she and choreographer Jo Thompson have started a non-profit company called Dancing for the Dream and give classes all over the world teaching people the health benefits of line dancing.
An additional example is the group “Step In The Name of Life” . Tony Gant’s grandmother really needed to engage in some form of exercise for her health. She saw a line dance demonstration and decided that this was for her and convinced Jamie to go with her to a class. He was so enthralled with line dancing, and its benefits, that he started a group in South Florida. They now have groups in at least 32 cities around the USA, helping people become fit, and lose weight, through line dancing.
