Warning Signs Of Postpartum Depressive Disorder

The birth of a baby is one occasion in a woman’s life, which has a huge impact on her, as it brings along a bundle of emotions such as joy, excitement, fear and anxiety. A lot of people may get surprised to know, but it also brings depression along at times.

Approximately eighty percent of women, who have recently become mothers, suffer from mood swings that bother them a lot. They may feel upset and detached from the baby and the rest of the family, and may not feel affectionate towards the child.

It is when these emotions seem to prolong and become severe, which becomes postpartum depression. As this occurs just after child birth, a lot of women and their families may be upset about the fact that they are not showering as much love to their babies as they should. However, this is not a character flaw; it is a feeling that some mothers go through after giving birth.

The indications of depression relating to pregnancy, called postpartum depression, should not be confused with that of baby blues, as the main difference among them is that the latter are short term and do not stick for a long time. Some signs of postpartum are the following:

The new mother may face a loss of appetite and would not feel like eating anything. Disturbances in sleep are also faced as, in some cases, it may turn into insomnia. Other symptoms include being easily irritated and angry, and not being able to find joy in any situation. These women may also start considering themselves as being sexually unattractive, which would result in lack of interest in sex. For feeling this way towards the baby, the mother may also feel guilt and shame.

At times, women may start to worry about the child’s health even if the baby would be in perfectly good health. These negative thoughts may further worsen the condition as the woman may not be able to feel at ease, at all.

Most importantly, suicidal thoughts may start to enter the mother’s mind and she may even attempt at taking her life. In such a situation, it is absolutely essential to seek treatment immediately.
