How To Best Get Rid Of Fruit Flies In Your Home

Leaving out rotting and fermented food in your house is one sure way that you will get a terrible fruit fly infestation. If you see small flies and gnats in your house, these could be a sign that you are headed for a crazy fruit fly infestation. Let’s face it, one fruit fly is already gross, but when you get hundreds or thousands of fruit flies, that is something else entirely. But that’s not the problem here. The big problem of fruit fly infestation is the fact that they can contaminate your family’s food with microbial diseases.

There are two ways that you can combat fruit flies infestation in your home. Method the first (and I’m a big fan of this) is the natural way like traps. Method the second involves pesticides or insecticides. I am not a big advocate of chemicals especially when it involves kids in the home. So I suggest strongly that you use the first method which I will write about here.

1. The inverted cone fly trap is one very effective but natural way that you can control fruit fly infestation. Basically, all you need to do is to cut the top portion of a soda bottle. Next, glue a paper cone on top of the soda bottle (make sure that the cone is inverted). Now, put some bait in the bottom of the soda bottle. Bait can be raw fish , meat, pickle juice, or sugar-water. The bait can be anything that you think is the most effective in attracting the fruit flies. Lastly, just put the trap where it is readily accessible to the fruit flies, and wait for them to fill it up.

2. The soap-bubble trap is an even easier way to capture fruit flies. All you need is an open glass, which should be big enough to contain the fruit flies (this all depends on the infestation you have). You can use some of the bait above under the bottle, but you need to shake the bottle with some dish soap. The dish soap bubbles will act as the trap for the fruit flies.

Last but not the least, allow me to give you a word of warning. Fruit fly infestation is not easy to remove just by killing off the visible adult fruit flies infesting your home. The best way to deal with infestation is to find the source and destroy the nest. Fruit flies can originate in garbage cans or sewer openings. This means that you have to clean your surroundings thoroughly in order to really remove the infestation in your home.
