Detox Diets – What Are They

There are many different types of detox diets around, and many people use them in order to either lose weight or to get healthy. They work by helping the liver, kidneys and lymph to remove toxins from your body. Less toxins means better health. And better health usually means no excess fat. So these diets can work on many levels and can produce great results.

Mention detox diets and you will usually get a debate about whether they work or not. Many claim they don’t, but others have had such great results that this is proof enough for them. And with many people trying to lose weight unsuccessfully, they are willing to give this a go. But a detox diet isn’t suitable for everyone, so discuss with your doctor before trying one.

I’m sure you will have heard of some of the popular detox diets, such as the Lemonade Diet or the raw food diet. But there are also a host of other types available as well. Different diets work for different people, so if you’re planning to start one, you should try to choose the one that’s most suited to your situation.

Most of these diets have some things in common, one of which is what you are allowed to eat:
* organic fruits and vegetables
* whole unprocessed foods
* water and juices
* some hebal teas
* some herbs, such as milk thistle

These diets will also emphasis avoiding certain things, including:
* alcohol
* cigarettes
* tea and coffee
* soft drinks
* drugs
* processed foods

So following a diet such as the above need not be difficult at all, as long as you plan ahead a little. But if you’re planning a stricter cleansing diet, then you will need to take much more care.

The strictest detox diet of all is the water fast. With this diet you don’t eat or drink anything at all except water. This diet should only be carried out under medical supervision, as it can be very dangerous if not done properly. A water fast will release toxins very quickly and for people that are very toxic it can overwhelm them and cause serious damage and even death. But done under medical supervision, this cleaning can produce wonderful results. The North Clinic in the USA conducts medically supervised water fasting.

If a water fast is too severe for you, a juice fast may be the way to go. You drink fruit and vegetable juices, so it’s a bit easier on the body because of all the nutrients you are getting from the juice. Juice fasting can also produce remarkable results. Consult a doctor before starting one.
