Is Alli “The Greatest” Weight Loss Pill?

Does alli work as a weight loss pill? At first glance, the answer is a definite yes, but take note of the following precautions.

You may also know it as Xenical, but alli is simply the over-the-counter name for the drug known as orlistat. Pronounce it like “alley” rather than “ally” in case you plan to ask for it but aren’t quite familiar with how to say it. Its purpose is as a fat blocker. And when we say fat blocker, we’re referring to a drug that absorbs fat whenever our food is digested – this drug has the FDA’s coveted seal of approval when it comes to assisting people who want to lose weight. You might think you could eat all the fatty foods you liked and then take alli to negate the effect but sadly that is not true. It should always be used in conjunction with a low fat diet plan under the supervision of a doctor.

The amount of weight loss achieved with alli is variable. One of these studies involved a year’s worth of medical tests, and between 36 and 55 percent of the subjects achieved at least 5% decrease in body mass, but the study did not conclude if all the mass lost was fat. An estimated 16 to 25 percent of the subjects achieved even more, losing 10% body mass or more – but take note this study did not indicate how much of the mass lost was fat. In combination with a calorie controlled diet, the effects could be expected to be greater. The risk of type 2 diabetes was also decreased, based on the study. The participants regained an average of one third of the weight that they had lost after stopping alli, but this is typical of most dieters.

However, taking alli does have its disadvantages, primarily those connected to the digestive process. The higher the fat content in the diet, the greater these side effects are likely to be, as the undigested fat is expelled from the body. You could experience flatulence, loose bowel movement and sometimes incontinence as your body tries to accustom itself to your ingesting the drug. The manufacturer’s website warns, “You may feel an urgent need to go to the bathroom. Until you have a sense of any treatment effects, it’s probably a smart idea to wear dark pants, and bring a change of clothes with you to work.” If you want to go on alli, your sense of urgency to lose weight must really be high!

However these side effects are reduced if you stick to the recommended low fat diet and as the manufacturers hint, the potentially embarrassing side effects can even be helpful in encouraging you to keep to your diet. Always remember that alli does not claim to work without consistent efforts toward weight loss from you. Their claim is that your weight loss efforts can be improved by up to 50%. So for example you can lose ten pounds without taking alli, you can go on it and potentially lose 15 pounds. It boosts your weight loss and rewards your efforts with better results than you could get by yourself. But take note these results are not guaranteed and may vary from person to person.

There is still no such thing as a perfect diet pill and probably won’t be, but you can bank on alli for its documented success in helping people lose weight. Always consult a doctor before going on any form of medication, and do so before taking alli, especially if previous diets have failed to work in the long term.
