Laser acne treatments are used for two main purposes in health care: first for the treatment of acne itself and second to improve the appearance of acne scars. They are very expensive but are not right for all conditions regardless of how popular they are. So what are laser acne treatments and what can you expect if you choose them in consultation with your doctor or dermatologist?
There are 3 main applications of lasers in the treatment of acne itself.
The first would be to use them in burning away hair follicle. Destroying the follicle will prevent any more acne on that site since most pimples form when sebum clogs up hair follicle. This is good for any area on the face where we do not want hair, but there are a huge number of hair follicles in the skin so it can take a while.
Next, the sebaceous gland where the sebum is formed can be burned away. To help prevent acne, some of the sebaceous glands need to be removed since many people produce excess sebum especially during adolescence and young adulthood. But later in life, there’s a risk that dry skin can be caused.
Third, the bacteria in an infected pimple can be oxidized. Although the bacteria is killed, it won’t prevent other pimples from forming later.
There are 2 different ways in which lasers are used in the treatment of acne scars. First, there is laser resurfacing. The top and scarred layer of the skin is removed and the middle layer is tightened so new and healthy skin forms. This is usually done in the doctor’s or dermatologist’s office with just a local anesthetic. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, the procedure can take up to an hour. The healing time for the skin will be about 3-10 days.
Then there’s a new form of acne scar treatment: fractional laser therapy. This works at a deeper level and does not damage the top layer of skin. It is an expensive procedure and is not usually covered on health insurance, unlike some other laser acne treatments.
