Everybody loves pizza, but when you are dieting, they seem to be taboo. After all an average pizza contains over 1,000 calories, an awful lot of those calories are in the form of saturated fats from the cheese. However, even when you are on a diet a pizza need not be completely off limits.
The easiest way to reduce the number of calories in a pizza meal is to simply eat less of it. This is not as bad as it sounds, if you share a pizza with a friend eating half of one instead of a whole one can still be a pleasure.
Cutting back on the other courses that you normally eat when you sit down to your pizza meal is another simple way of cutting out calories. Instead of having dough balls or garlic bread as an appetizer, order a salad. Drink diet coke or soda instead of regular coke or soda. Order a small glass of low-alcohol wine or beer instead of a big glass of high alcohol wine or beer. Replace ice cream or tiramisu with low-fat frozen yoghurt or a piece of fruit. Doing these things will save you up to two thirds of the calories you would normally consume when eating a pizza in a restaurant.
Nowadays, many pizza restaurants and pizza chains offer lower-calorie options as part of their standard menu. Some simply take the centre out of their pizza and add a small salad or char grilled vegetables to the centre instead. Your plate looks full, but the calories are halved. Others make their pizzas using low fat cheese, or offer cheese free vegan pizzas. Low-fat or low-calorie pizzas often taste as good as or even better than more traditional pizzas.
With a little thought you can turn a pizza meal into a healthy, enjoyable experience that does not leave you feeling bloated. If you simply cannot resist your normal pizza, eat only half of it to start with then take the rest home and eat a slice cold the next day. You can then cut up the remaining few slices and freeze them. You can then get a single slice out of the freezer and use it to fill out a salad meal. That way you can satisfy your urge for junk food, without ruining your diet.
