Antioxidants & Coconut Oil – How The Enzymes In This Oil Help Skin

All natural products have become incredibly popular because of the tremendous health benefits that they have for us. One of the best benefits of all natural products is that they tend to be higher in antioxidants than other products. This does not just include food. It also includes skin care products.

One of the best skin care products is all natural, organic coconut oil. One of the greatest benefits of coconut oil is that it is naturally rich with antioxidants. Antioxidants are great for skin because they protect it from free-radicals and therefore help to prevent skin damage–this also helps to slow down the aging process.

You have probably heard quite a bit about antioxidants over the last few years and about how they are important to us in a number of ways. But do you know exactly what antioxidants are and what they do?

What Are Antioxidants?
Anti and oxidant are the two root parts of the word, and as the name implies these magic enzymes and nutrients help to stop the damaging effects of a process known as oxidation. Oxidation is a process which can damage everything form the skin to, well, an apple. One of the best examples of oxidation is as such. If you take a bite out of an apple and let it sit, the inside will eventually start to turn brown. The browning of the inside of the apple is a clear representation of the oxidation process at work. Antioxidants are enzymes that can rapidly slow down this process. For example, if you wet the inside of the apple with lemon juice–which is naturally high in antioxidants–it will prevent the apple from browning quickly.

How Do Antioxidants Work?
Natural coconut oil products like coconut creams, soaps, and lotions help to slow down the oxidation process in the skin. They also neutralize and break the chain-creation of free-radicals. Oxygen is actually considered a free-radical. Free-radicals are unstable molecules that are missing an electron. In an effort to try and balance out, the free-radical will steal an electron from another molecule–like a skin molecule for example. This turns the skin molecule into a free-radical, which means that it becomes unstable. The antioxidants in skin care products containing organic, unrefined coconut oil work by giving up some of their own electrons to the free-radicals. This stabilizes the free-radicals and protects skin molecules from damage.
