Becoming a vegetarian is an ideal for many people that believe they should convert but don’t fully understand the benefits. A person in this situation may also be questioning if this dramatic change to their life will help the planet at all.
However, if enough individuals do stop, it becomes statistically more important to the health of animals on this planet. A classic example of this is illustrated by the amount of heart disease in the USA that meat-eaters suffer from.
Many of today’s heart conditions would not be so commonplace if people did not eat so much food with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy products and eggs. In fact the group Earth Save states that a vegetarian has around 25 percent less chance of a heart attack than someone who consumes meat as part of their diet. Pure vegans have an even lower likelihood of a heart attack with only a 10 percent chance against a meat eater. The improvements in health do not end there if you are a vegetarian.
Preservatives which are used a great deal in meat are reduced and so are the incidences of cancer. As a vegetarian you won’t be exposed to various hormones (that are packed into animal feed), which often disrupt normal hormonal processes in the body. It is also much easier to avoid the consumption of lactose which many people have intolerance to, causing digestive conditions. On a more ethical note, you will be surprised how much less suffering in animals you will be responsible for by becoming a vegetarian.
The organization Vegan Out-Reach claims that the number of animals killed to feed the average American citizen during their life is in excess of two thousand seven hundred. Just in a couple of decades, many hundreds of animals would not need to loose their lives if you were to make this commitment.
If you were also to give up dairy products and eggs, many battery hens and cows would not need to be used to feed you. Well after reading this it is obvious the easy answer is yes it is better to become a vegetarian. This commitment matters to each individual for their health, the health of the planet and those of the animals which will not need to be slaughtered to provide food.
