Metal Braces are becoming a Thing of the Past

It’s that time of year again when resolutions are made for the year ahead, and most people are in a positive frame of mind for the year ahead. This year, instead of looking at giving something up why not try and take something up that can improve your well being and make you feel better on the inside?

Usually losing weight and getting fit are at the top of most people’s list when it comes to looking good and feeling better – but recently there has been a rise in the number of people interested in improving their oral health, and in particular, their smile. Modern dental techniques mean that dental work is nowhere near as traumatic or painful as it used to be and in many cases, new techniques mean that this work can be carried out discreetly and in some cases, go by completely unnoticed.

If you have teeth that aren’t straight having treatment that is difficult for others to spot may seem like a distant dream – especially for those who are only aware of traditional metal braces. Now there are alternatives to having metal braces, clear aligners and lingual braces are just a couple of examples of what can be achieved with modern techniques and how to teeth can be straightened without the whole world knowing.

Lingual braces are in fact made from metal, but the big difference between them and traditional braces is that they are fixed behind the teeth and so can’t be seen. This makes lingual braces an ideal solution for people worried about their appearance or what braces will look like on them. They are fixed in position so cannot be removed, however, this does mean that compared to traditional braces, it is easier to maintain a good standard of oral hygiene and to keep your teeth clean.

One of the main things that puts people off wearing braces is the fact that they can’t remove them. Modern clear braces are made from hard wearing transparent material, they fit over the teeth and are designed to address the needs of each individual patient, and there are options which mean they can be removed. Obviously they need to be worn to be effective and work as they should, but for eating, drinking and brushing it is useful to be able to take them out.

Visiting the dentist isn’t usually on people’s lists of things to do in a new year; however, it is a good step to take towards a healthier lifestyle and will start the year off on a positive, healthy note. Make this year a healthier one and why not give your smile and self-confidence a boost at the same time?
