Male Hair Loss – What Can Be Done

The majority of American men will be aware of some hair loss by the age of 35. By age 50, nearly 85% of men will have experienced thinning hair. A quarter of the men who experience this loss begin before they reach the age of 21. And 95% of this hair loss is male pattern baldness.

Male pattern baldness interferes with numerous sectors of a man’s life. It can change relationships and professional life. Sometimes men change their careers as a result. Most men who have it are not very happy about it and many would resort to just about any remedy to change it.

The vast majority of hair loss treatments being marketed today are nothing more than “snake oil.” You may have seen the ads in the back of men’s magazines, you’ve heard the commercials on the radio, and you’ve seen the infomercials promoting miracle treatments for hair loss. Most of these treatments are about as reliable as using extract of goat testicles to treat impotence.

The various causes assigned to hair loss are too numerous to name. But it did not occur because you wore your baseball cap all the time, even while sleeping. Nor did it occur as a result of a nutritional deficiency. It is not a result of stress. And certainly it is not because of excess sweating. The name for male pattern baldness is Androgenic Alopecia. Androgens is a scientific name for male hormones. The hair loss occurs because of a genetic predisposition and because of the dwindling supply of hormones produced by the body as we age.

So what makes sense here as a means of stopping hair loss? If the hormones decrease as you age, then why not replace the hormones to a more youthful level?

Andropause in men is the name for what women call menopause. Besides hair loss, there are other symptoms as the hormones (androgens) decrease in proportion to age. Loss of libido, decreased muscle mass and strength, low energy, insomnia, nervousness and depression can also be symptoms. Muscle mass decreases and body fat increases.

Men can benefit from bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, just as women do. (Note: Bio-identical is an important word – it means the replacement hormones are not synthetic, but are identical to the hormones produced by the human body.) Optimal health is dependent upon the balance of hormones and not just one single hormone. Currently men with low androgens (male hormones) can benefit from the hormone replacement therapy. The therapy definitely improves quality of life and increases life span.

There will be other results in addition to stopping hair loss – lower blood pressure, lower risk of heart attack, restored libido, healthy prostate gland, and slowing loss of muscle mass and strength are a few. Starting hormone replacement early in life is very much recommended, although it can help men 50 or 60 or older. In order to start this therapy, medical testing is required to find out which hormones should be replaced and in what amount.
