In an ever increasing attempt to make a profit, savvy marketers have inundated the information highways with way too many fat loss myths.
What does this mean for you? Unless you have a PhD in nutrition, separating the wheat from the chaff can be extremely difficult, if not impossible.
So here are some common myths exposed:
1. You can’t eat carbs if you want to lose weight: On the contrary, you should eat carbs for sustainable weight loss. You see, eating carbs is the best way to preserve muscle mass. And recall that muscle mass accounts for a huge portion of your metabolic rate.
2. It’s all about calories: Yes, you have to eat less calories than you burn off. But, the quality and timing of those calories can make your fat loss journey a living hell or a manageable challenge. Even better, optimizing the above factors will increase loss of fat while minimizing loss of lean calorie-burning tissue.
3. Weight gain as an adult isn’t as detrimental as weight gain as a child: There is some truth to this. You see, your fat cells do replicate at a higher rate when you are young, and unhealthy eating patterns are more likely to be imprinted in your mind when you are young. However, current research has shown that fat cells do replicate in adults at much faster rates than previously expected.
4. Stimulants are evil: Stimulants are evil only if you abuse them. On the other hand, when taken in small amounts they can really make dieting that much easier. Not only will they lift your spirits, but they will also break down more fat cells.
5. It’s hard to gain weight by eating too much protein: Protein has a lot of benefits. It creates a strong sense of fullness and it does have a high thermogenic effect. However, it’s also easily converted into fat within your body. So don’t assume you can eat all the protein under the sun and not gain fat.
The bottom line is that eating to lose fat doesn’t have to be rocket science. Ignore all the fads and stick to a prudent plan that creates sustainable fat loss. And remember: taking action is the most important part of the equation here!
