Orthodontic Treatment Is Not Just For Kids

When we were children, most of us knew someone who wore braces. Often those devices had a metallic look, and sometimes were accompanied by odd-looking fasteners that fit around the head. As children, we knew that these had been installed by an orthodontist. Even though we learned later that this person was actually a specialized dentist, orthodontic treatment was not something we actively sought as children.

Those same children grew up to be grateful adults, thankful that they endured that early treatment in order to have a bright, even smile. Yet, there are still many people who endure an entire lifetime of feeling self-conscious about unattractive, poorly positioned teeth. For various reasons they did not receive any childhood treatment. Can adults, as well as children, successfully benefit from corrective orthodontics?

Ideally, no one would have to deal with misaligned teeth at any age. In reality, there actually is a time that is optimal for beginning treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists states that most children need to undergo an exam for possible orthodontic issues as soon as possible, which means no later than age seven for most children. The earlier problems are detected, the more easily they are solved.

Childhood screening needs to happen shortly after the first adult molars make their appearance. These teeth form the foundation of the strong back bite, and when they first appear a specialist is able to tell if there are going to be problems with protrusion, crowding, or jaw space. All of those issues are potential sources of adult problems, but if caught early and treated they will be undetectable in later life.

A child who receives prompt and professional treatment at an early age enjoys benefits throughout life. Adults living with untreated problems, however, can experience such unpleasant symptoms as accelerated tooth decay, periodontal inflammation and infection, and even associated digestive problems. Other tooth related problems include chronic headache, or facial and neck pain, inability to chew properly, and abnormal wear.

Even with all this possible suffering, some wonder whether treating adults for crooked teeth is possible or advisable. The answer is that treatment can be effective at any age, not just extreme youth. When overall oral and physical health is good, age becomes less of a factor. Actually, up to one-quarter of all orthodontic appointments today are for adults seeking help for problems missed during childhood.

The success rates for adult treatments exceed those for younger people. This happens in part because adults understand why they are undergoing any discomfort, and are much more cooperative with the doctor. An adult is also usually paying for at least part of the cost out of his or her own funds, which is an excellent motivation. And, most adults are not really socially intimidated by visible dental work in the same way children are, and often will exert extra effort to maintain the best possible oral hygiene.

The truth is that teeth can be made to look strong and healthy at nearly any stage of life. Today, in addition to tradition metal braces, many orthodontists use ceramics and clear plastic, and dental work may not really be noticeable. Most adults refuse to neglect their children’s dental health, and should treat themselves with the same concern. Ask your dentist if you need or qualify for orthodontic treatment. A beautiful smile is possible for nearly anyone.
