Is Fruit Making You Get Heavier?

Don’t buy into all the juicing commercials: having multiple fruit smoothies every day is not healthy for you. In fact, this is a great way to flood your system with sugar-the fat gain nutrient.

And the sugar found in fruit causes your liver to increase production of triglycerides and cholesterol. Over the long run, this can compromise circulation.

So here is how to make sure your fruit intake doesn’t make you fat:

1. Have most of your fruit during breakfast: When you wake up your liver is devoid of carbohydrates. Having fruit in the morning will refill your liver with little ill effect on the rest of your body. Even better, you are more likely to burn off any potential excess sugar.

2. Eat a small piece before working out: Again, your liver maintains blood sugar levels. So having a little fruit before exercise will help keep you from hitting a wall. And once you hit a wall, exercise becomes very difficult and unpleasant.

3. Go for variety: The more different kinds of fruit you have (in moderation) the more health you will derive per unit of fruit consumed. You see, different foods interact with each other in ways that science still doesn’t understand.

4. Don’t drink your fruit: Avoid fruit juices, fruit smoothies and any other form of liquefied fruit intake. Having whole fruit will not only stabilize your blood sugar levels, but it will also help you feel fuller for longer. Even better, eating the whole fruit will provide a much great amount of nutrients.

5. Understand that fruit is optional: You should only eat fruit if you absolutely have to have it. Otherwise, vegetables provide just as many nutrients with virtually no sugar. My personal recommendation is to have the bare minimum amount of fruit for your particular psychological and physical needs.

Now I don’t want to scare you away from fruit with this article. You see, fruit is healthy for you when taken in moderation during special times of the day. So just keep an eye on your intake and don’t get all worked up here!
