Mens health – A Widespread Sexually Transmitted Disease

Chlamydia is a sexually spread disease caused by a bacterium called “Chlamydia trachomatis”. This bacterium not only infects the reproductive organs but can also infect the urinary tract as well as eyes and throat.

The bacteria leading to Chlamydia can be spread via oral, anal or vaginal sex. An unborn child can catch this disease during vaginal birth. In the recent years the count of individuals infected from Chlamydia have increased manifold making it the most widespread sexually spread infection among the teenagers and youngsters.

If a woman is suffering from Chlamydia, she is most likely to have itching in the vagina, vaginal discharge, urination accompanied by burning sensation, painful sexual intercourse, bleeding between menstrual periods, inflammation in the rectum and the lining of the eye, nausea, fever and pain. However, a male suffering from this might have penile discharge, urination along with by burning sensation, irritation at the opening of the penis, inflammation in the testicles, rectum and lining of the eye.

Chlamydia is also known as “silent epidemic” because in most of the cases, i.e. 75% in women and 50% in males, Chlamydia does not reveal any indications. This makes its detection even more difficult.

Effective antibiotics for Chlamydia are however commonly available. Azithromycin and doxycycline are two best and widely used antibiotics for Chlamydia. A single dose of Azithromycin is used in the cure. However, if doxycycline is being administered for the cure then it has week long dosage schedule.

These two antibiotics have proved to be useful in the most severe and constant cases too. Erythromycin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin and amoxicillin are a few other alternate antibiotics for Chlamydia. From these four, erythromycin and amoxicillin are the two antibiotics found safe to be consumed by expecting women too.

Chlamydia can be prevented by using condom during sex, not having multiple sex partners and by abstaining sex with infected person. Sex education must also be imparted to teenagers and young adults to make them aware about the sexually transmitted infection, how they are caused, their prevention, indications and the treatment available for these.
