The fact is that hair removal by light, including laser hair removal, and IPL hair removal have been around for years. In fact it was sometime back in the early seventies that the first experiments were done with it in Europe. So then just what is IPL, and why is it different from laser?
To understand the difference between the two, you must first come to some understanding of light in general. For instance the light that you get when you click on a standard light bulb or step outdoors is comprised of several wavelengths, all mixed up together.
As an example, are you aware that light waves come in several various colors? In fact as you watch the sun set, perhaps you may have noticed that as the sunlight is screened through the thicker atmospheric layer on the horizon, it begins to change to a yellow color.
A laser is created by making light that’s composed of one singular wave length. This is done by passing an electric charge through a substance that creates only one type of light when this is done. Now there are several different types of materials that are used to do this.
So think of a laser as a rifle that’s shooting only one bullet. Just one type of light. On the other hand, you can think of an IPL, or intense pulsed light as a shotgun. It’s shooting several bullets. Several types or wavelengths of light at once. Are you getting the picture now?
Be aware though that both systems are specialized concentrated light, so they’re quite often substituted for one another in clinics, and salons. They have minor differences in how they perform to remove unwanted hair, but in the end they’re both concentrated light forms.
Both of them work by in effect “cooking” the hair follicle so it dies. You see, your skin is opaque, or clear, so the light passes right through it. Hair and hair follicles on the other hand, tend to be darker in color and light is always attracted to object that are darker colored.
Do keep in mind though that in spite of this higher level of technology that’s employed in these procedures, there as of yet is no system that delivers “permanent” hair removal. Yes they can “knock it back” for up to a decade or so, but in time further treatments will be required.
