Don’t destroy marriages save them

Newspapers are saying that David Letterman, late-night CBS host, is struggling to save his marriage after his repeated forays into fornication among his staff members.

Actually I don’t know why he’s concerned because as far as I can see, his wife, Regina Lasko, has no call to be distressed. After all, she hooked up with Letterman in 1986 and they had an illegitimate son. I mean, why should she expect his behavior to change just because he has a child and a ring on his finger? It was only in 2009 that he decided to marry her.

Was it because he wanted to impress the public that Letterman, on “Live! With Regis and Kelly,” called his behavior foolish and reckless? He said it hurt his family and himself. “You take a look at the explosion,” he’s reported as saying, “and it knocks you down and you wake up every morning and you’re frightened and you’re depressed and sad. And you kind of got to let that knock you down and knock you down, and then pretty soon you’ve got to start knocking it down. And then, when that happens, you start looking at the pieces left of your life.”

Oh, really. How mature is this guy??? Is he a wide-eyed, innocent, I-just-didn’t-understand, kid? Scarcely.

He was born in April of 1947 of parents who seemingly loved and were faithful to one another. There are no reports of beatings or abuse of little David. That didn’t stop this guy. His present marriage is his second and he had a long term relationship in between marriages with his former head writer and producer on Late Night, Merrill Markoe, not to speak of his extra-curricular sexual conquests.

So why should he be scared, depressed and miserable all of a sudden? Would it have something to do with the fact that his father died of a heart attack at age 57, younger than Letterman is now, and that Letterman himself has had a quadruple bypass? Could it possibly be that he might be thinking: If I dropped dead today what would I say to God as I stand before Him with a truckload of failed marriages and illicit sexual relationships?

Or is he suffering from the demons that come from a guilty conscience because he handled women as if they were sexual toys for him to use when and where he wished?

Fornicators and adulterers have an entitlement issue, it seems, and being resplendent with money and powerful positions in society enhances their ability to indulge their excesses. Doesn’t that make it okay?

Whether sexual intercourse takes place between two unmarried people or between two married persons not married to each other, it’s smelly business – societally, spiritually and emotionally. It might be presented as romantic in a movie, a TV show or in the written media; but adults, teens and children are affected by the fallout.

We each have to face God someday and no one knows when that day will come. He has always condemned fornication in any form. Whether you believe in God or not doesn’t change the fact that He is. Whether you think He notices that you are fornicating, outside of marriage or in, or not, doesn’t change the fact that He does. Whether you think adulterous behavior affects your children or not, be assured that, in time, it will. Whether you believe that your contribution to spiritual darkness by forays into fornication and thus not trying to save your marriage, matters or not, that doesn’t change the fact that it does.

You are accountable for you. I am responsible for me. But we all are responsible for others, as well. If talk show hosts, Hollywood, Save the Earth people, Protect the Animals people, people on the political right and/or left, and anyone who is protesting anything, also would march in the streets against that which rots families – fornication – if they would fight the idea of divorce instead of supporting it – if they would lend their strengths to sincere efforts of trying to save marriages and families – their anger would be more believable.
