Many people on a budget tend to buy cheap packaged food. Unfortunately, packaged foods are almost never nutrient dense. The good news is that they can be easily replaced with healthier options that work well on a budget.
Keep the junk food out of your cart by avoiding those tempting aisles and by leaving the kids at home. It is hard enough to tell yourself no without having to say it twenty times to your children.
Drink more water. When you are looking to save money at the grocery store, this is a great place to cut back. Most Americans today are chronically dehydrated. Not only will switching to water benefit your wallet, it will also benefit your health. Save the soft drinks for special occasions only and use milk only on dishes that require it such as breakfast cereal.
Buy fruit in bulk when it is in season. Buying in season mean lower costs because the fruit has not been stored in a refrigerated warehouse. Freeze, can or dry the extra fruit that you do not use and you will have plenty of inexpensive fruit all year round.
Replace the meat in your recipes with beans. Not only are beans high in protein, they are also high in fiber and cost a small fraction of the price of meat, especially when you buy them in bulk.
Incorporate more peanut butter into your diet. It is both inexpensive and packed with protein. Spread it on bread for a sandwich and add some jelly, bananas or honey. Or eat a scoop of peanut butter with a piece of fruit.
Fill up on water dense foods such as salads and fruits. Not only will your health improve, you will also feel fuller with each meal which will save you money on the more expensive and less filling food items.
