Do not use the bars to put your weight on. If you do this you will not get the benefits of working out. The bars are just meant to help you balance.

If you find it impossible to use the elliptical trainer without leaning on the bars, find one that has handles instead of bars. These handles can keep you balanced because they move from side to side with your arms as you workout. This also ensures that you get the maximum benefits from your workout.
