Key Components of Human Skin

The two most important yet natural secrets to healthy skin are sebum (natural skin oil) and moisture. Sebum are produced and secreted in tiny glands (sebaceous glands) around every hair on your body. Sebum plays an important role in skin and hair healthy by keeping hairs and skin supple, binding the skin’s top layer of dead cells and barricading moisture in, bacteria out.

Another main component of skin is moisture or water. Only skin with sufficient moisture is supple and youthful. Hyaluronic acid is one of the known effective moisturizing ingredients in skincare products. Actually, Hyaluronic acid exists in human skin naturally. It attracts water from the air and binds it to the skin.

Other than sebaceous glands, there are sweat glands in our skin. Sweat glands are responsible for the production of sweat which takes away our body heat through evaporation. Actually, sweat plays an important role in bacterial protection. Sweat is mixed with sebum to form an acid mantle which prevents harmful bacteria from thriving on the skin.

Because of this acid mantle, the pH value of our skin is not neutral (pH 7), but slightly acidic. In a scale of pH value ranging from pH 1 (most acidic) and pH 14 (most alkaline), normal skin pH ranges from pH 5.4 to 6.2. Some skincare products may be slightly acidic (up to pH 4) in order to provide extra protection to our skin.

Skin color (complexion) is largely dependent on the amount of Melanin in our skin. Melanin is a dark pigment in human skin. In general, the larger the amount of Melanin in our skin, the darker is our skin.

But, Melanin does not only determine our complexion. It is an important component in protecting us from UV radiations. Melanin protects our dermis and epidermis from damages by screening out the UV radiations from the sun. Therefore, people of Asian, Mediterranean, Latin, African, and Afro-Caribbean ethnic heritage have the natural sun protection (darker skin) developed in their ancestors’ original sunny climates.
