There is more to baby skin care than most parents realize. Proper care of infant skin involves keeping the whole baby clean. It can take a newborn baby’s skin a few months to adjust to life in the outside world which is why a newborn baby is more prone to skin conditions. Proper baby skin care involves making smart decisions all day long. Anything from your baby’s clothing to the soap that is used in his (or her) bath has the potential to affect his (or her) skin. Don’t stress out too much though: practicing good baby skin care does not have to be intricate or hard. With some basic common sense, skin care can be incredibly easy. If you need some help figuring out a good routine, here are a few hints to help you out.
Daily baths are not required for newborns and very young infants. This is because most new babies don’t get very dirty. This is because they are mostly immobile and depend on their parents to get them from point A to point B. This means that parents can keep an eye out for things that will get the baby dirty or that could harm the baby’s skin. Baths only need to be given two or three times each week if you keep your newborn son or daughter’s face clean. When babies learn to crawl and walk, however, you need to give them baths more frequent.
Use a gentle detergent on your baby’s clothing and bedding–do not simply throw the baby’s stuff in with your own when you do laundry. The detergent you use on your clothing is often too harsh for use on baby’s clothes. Laundry soap used on adult clothing often leaves behind a residue that will cause irritation–and roughen up the baby’s clothing in the process. To avoid laundry induced skin issues use a gentle soap–it will keep your baby’s clothes soft and rarely leaves behind any residue.
You will also want to take extra precaution against the sun with hats and umbrellas. Any sunburn that does turn up can be treated with a cool soft cloth a few times a day for ten to fifteen minutes per application.
There are plenty of methods for practicing proper baby skin care. There is more to proper baby skin care than plain baths. Finding the right laundry detergent, using sunscreen and even letting your baby roll around naked are all important skin care decisions. Don’t worry too much–eventually protecting and caring for your baby’s skin will be second nature. Before you know what has happened all of this will be second nature!
