Plateaus have a reputation for killing people’s motivation. After all, who would want to keep on moving forward if they aren’t getting results?
And the sad part here is that many people simply do not know what changes to make to get out of this hole.
So here are some ways to tweak your diet if you hit a plateau:
1. Start keeping a log: Without a nutrition log you will not be able to see where the calories are coming from. Additionally, you will not be able to pick up on the subtle patterns which can help shed light as to what’s going on.
2. Eat as much roughage as your body can handle: This is brutally simple, yet it can singlehandedly bring you out of a rut. You see, not only do vegetables create a lot of bulk in your stomach, but they also increase energy with minimal caloric load.
3. Slowly constrict caloric intake: Use your food journal as a guide and slowly begin to reduce serving sizes. Now the key here is to do this slowly. If you restrict calories too quickly your body will literally shutdown. Your metabolism will slow down and you will produce less fat burning hormones.
4. Burn more calories with exercise: This creates less hunger than eliminating calories with diet. You see, your body is much more sensitive to dietary restrictions than it is to increases in exercise. In the end, you are better off losing those last few pounds with exercise than with massive restrictions in food intake.
5. Make sure you are measuring the right things: Before you even start changing your diet make sure you are in a plateau. You see, many people falsely believe they aren’t making progress because their scale weight isn’t changing. However, they are losing fat and building muscle.
6. Get a digital food scale and use it all the time: Now this should only be done as a measure of last resort. You see, it’s very demanding and time consuming. Having said that, there is no better way to figure out what is going on with laser precision.
No one should have to endure a plateau for very long. The key here is to take action as soon as you feel a plateau coming. So don’t delay, and act on these tips today!
