Having established that your body needs a well balanced diet, you need to know how to put it into practice. Much media attention is focused on foods that one should not have, yet there has been very little to tell women how they can use food to enhance their life rather than make it more difficult.
Forget the labels; every figure is relative and food manufacturers are frequently very selective about what they tell you, making your task of deciding what is right for you an impossible one. Instead build your choices on the following guidelines.
Before eating snacks or meals – even beverages – ask yourself whether you want, like and need it. If you enjoy it and want it, then don’t miss an eating experience that you will enjoy. Replace boring and unnecessary eating out of your diet plan and instead select food you enjoy.
The worst part of dieting is the sense of guilt after eating. Eating something that is not the healthiest choice is not a crime. If you really had a craving, or there was a situation where no other choices were available, enjoy the food and then don’t think about it. This may help you decide if a healthy lifestyle is worth it to you – it is worth sticking with for most people. A healthy diet and lifestyle should help, not hinder, our lives.
Eating fruits and vegetables everyday (strive for 5 portions) provides your body with necessary vitamins and minerals. This keeps your body in optimal condition for fighting diseases. The fiber in these foods helps other foods move through the body more efficiently. It also keeps your body full, helping control eating habits, while the energy levels increase and remain steady.
Choose lean sources of protein. Fish, shellfish, lean red meat, game, poultry, eggs or pulses meet your body’s protein requirements without overloading on fats.
Help your body adjust to a decreased fat levels. Use butter, sesame or walnut oil, and olive oils to enhance the food’s flavor during cooking or eating, making sure to keep the levels low.
Water is important – drink at least eight glasses every day. This helps the fiber found in your food swell and to perform its functions. It metabolizes the nutritional functions found in your foods to work, while keeping your skin, hair and nails healthy. It is also essential to avoid dehydration.
Try to eat regularly and ideally not leave your stomach empty for more than four to five hour. This helps to keep your gut functioning effectively. Regular eating helps your gut maintain a steady supply of digestive enzymes protects it from excess acid secretion and enables it to metabolize food in the most efficient way, to keep your energy level and moods on an even keel
Alcohol should be used in moderation. Drinking can be an enjoyable part of a healthy life, but excessive alcohol causes liver damage, energy and mood consequences. Don’t drink on an empty stomach; this can cause the blood sugar levels to change rapidly.
