There is a lot of information out there on how to exercise to get into great shape. Unfortunately, sifting through all this information can give you a mental hernia.
Thus, without further ado, here are 6 exercise misconceptions that you have to know about:
1. Psyching yourself up is useless: In reality, doing this can increase the output of good stress hormones in your body. And having more of these hormones in circulation before working out can help you have a phenomenal workout.
2. Having carbs during exercise is good: For the great majority of people wishing to get in shape, this is not a good strategy. The only time you should consider having carbs is if you are an endurance athlete who is going to train for more than one hour. Otherwise, have a pre workout snack, no more.
3. Maximum heart rate can change: The only factor that will change your maximum heart rate is age. Thus, do not waste your time focusing on this variable. The only thing you can change here is your resting heart rate. As you become more conditioned, your resting heart rate will go down.
4. Carbohydrate elimination is the most effective way to lose weight: Do this and you will suffer, a lot. Your brain needs a constant supply of glucose (digested carbs) in order to function properly. Also, your mood depends on carbohydrate intake. Focus on total caloric intake when trying to optimize weight loss.
5. Cardio is the best modality for increasing heart health: Cardio definitely does a great job at increasing heart health by making the left ventricle more voluminous. However, strength training also does a great job at increasing the wall size of your heart’s chambers. So include both for maximum heart health.
6. Isolating select muscle groups is inefficient: I totally disagree here. If you want toned arms, for example, then you need to do exercises that tone the specific areas of interest. Now don’t get me wrong, combining a total fat loss plan with laser specific toning is the best approach. But don’t think isolating muscles is not fruitful.
There is a lot of information on how to get in shape. And if you aren’t careful here, you might end up following the wrong advice. So stick to what is backed by time tested research!
