When you hear someone talk about jump rope, do you think back to your school days? Children have loved to jump rope for centuries. It’s a fun and easy pastime. It is sometimes called jumping rope, jump roping, or skipping rope. The phrase jump rope can refer to either the activity or the rope itself.
The game of jump rope isn’t just for kids any more. These days, more and more adults are realizing the health benefits of jumping rope. It’s great exercise! You can fight obesity and heart disease, help control type II diabetes, protect against osteoporosis, and improve your energy and strength all with one very simple and inexpensive activity!
Jump rope should be done with safe footwear on. You should always jump rope in athletic or aerobic shoes which fit well and which provide appropriate cushioning and support. You also need a good jump rope. These days there is a wide selection of fitness and speed ropes to choose from, you won’t have to use a child’s toy.
Choose the right jump rope for you. You need to remember: what doesn’t feel heavy when you first pick it up may feel pretty heavy once you are exercising and becoming tired! The ropes with a weighty rope or very heavy handles tend to be awkward and difficult to use. Try the ropes that are a bit lighter, the ones with the foam handles. These have the added benefit of having the handles be slip resistant. That is a very important feature once you have sweaty palms. A rope with foam grip handles won’t go flying out of your grasp.
Manufacturers and producers have come up with new ways to create beaded and speed style ropes. There is a rope for any jumper these days – single ropes, long ropes, double ropes, varieties of different colors and styles.
When you shop for a jump rope, style and color are second of course to fit. You need to find one that is the right length, based on your own height. Here is how.
To find the right length rope, try a rope out. Jump with it a few times. When you jump over it, it should just barely brush the ground. You don’t want a rope that hits the ground in front of you and then drags. That rope is too long. You also don’t want a rope that doesn’t touch the ground at all when you jump over it, that rope is too short.
If you get yourself a jump rope and then get in the habit of jumping rope, you’ll find that not only do you have a lot of fun, you will also become much healthier.
