Poultry products such as chicken and eggs are one of the most common food commodities in the world today. However, did you know that there are things you need to know about how these animals are bred and mass produced in captivity? A couple of these reasons can prove significant enough to convince you to switch to a vegetarian diet. First off is the way that these animals are actually being housed in poultries. They are typically caged together in significant numbers to save space and cost. Now the premise of having all those chickens living in proximity with one another makes it a lot easier to pass all that bacteria and illnesses around and that’s never a good thing.
You may at times find comfort in addressing this through proud statements of retailers that the commodity the eggs and meat that they sell are bred in wide areas and have not been subjected to all sorts of artificial substances but the only way to be sure about that is if they have a credible certification for it. Otherwise, the chicken meat and eggs that you purchased from them could possibly have been subjected to all sorts of antibiotics and growth stimulants that would allow sellers to process them quickly and effectively but all these substances can have a relatively unhealthy effect on the human body. The idea of having all those chicken dwelling in such a limited space and unsanitary environment doesn’t help either.
Did you also know that extreme sanitary measures are being used in the poultry business for people that actually come in contact with these animals? At most, this includes the use of bleach which is one of the most powerful chemicals known to eradicate bacteria and other harmful organisms.
This alone should present a valid thought of how much bacteria these poultry products actually contain. I don’t know about you but the thought of consuming something that required people to use substances such as bleach in order to disinfect themselves after coming in contact with it isn’t particularly pleasing. Some may say that such bacteria can easily be killed off by simply cooking the meat since we never actually eat them raw anyway. However, what many fail to consider is the fact that you actually need to cook the meat at a specified temperature at a required duration of time in order to rid it of bacteria. Now let me ask you, how many of us actually prepare these kinds of food with that much attention to these details?
You may think that this is no big deal and that if that’s actually the case, then you’ll just avoid eating poultry products but this is actually not the case and the same condition is applicable to other mass produced animals as well. One good example would be turkeys. Besides, all these animals have been exposed to so much artificial substances that you may find them to taste a tad bit different. Although such effects are hardly surprising since even the most well prepared poultry products have been exposed to artificial substances at one point or another.
If you find this all hard to believe then you should consider looking into a specific videos or books written by John Robbins called “Diet for a Small Planet”. It features multiple photos of people handling chickens by pulling on their necks and slamming them to a cage. I don’t know about you, but that image alone is enough to discourage me from eating another chicken.
While people would argue that the present means of mass producing these animals are the most effective and efficient ones or that the means of addressing the current food demand takes priority above all others It’s significant to point out that these animals were never meant to be handled or commercialized this way. It represents a significant factor of man’s cruelty while the producing something that’s certainly a substandard with regards to its effects on our health.
Now you might say that this doesn’t really make any real difference and that this is all completely natural since what we are dealing with here are animals regarded as a food commodity. While that may be true, it is highly doubtful that all the artificial methods used to raise such animals had not affected it significantly.
