A myth is something that is not completely true, a story that has grown bigger than its truth. And there are many about chocolates that are far from true. If you enjoy one as much as I do, it is nice to know that something that tastes so good is not exactly bad for you, and is certainly not the reason for many of the issues relating to health that it has been blamed for in the past.
Chocolates do not make people fat. This has more to do with a lack of exercise and of course how many calories we eat each day. Most people who are overweight, do not partake in enough physical activities.
The average chocolate bar has about 200 to 220 calories in it, and in a few weight control diets, they are used as rewards. Eating a chocolate can be used to stop binge eating, as often this happens because you feel like you are being denied highly satisfying foods.
Chocolate is also not as as bad for your teeth as many thought, according to a few dental studies. Many believed it caused tooth decay, but although it does have fermentable carbohydrates in, it is actually not as bad as most other candies. It has a high fat content, so it clears the mouth quicker because chocolate melts faster. The calcium, protein and phosphate in milk chocolate are believed to have favorable protective effects on enamel.
Chocolates are actually quite low when it comes to cholesterol, a small bar has about 10 to 12 mg in it only, which is approximately half the intake of eating a piece of cheddar cheese smaller than the chocolate. This is actually quite low considering that doctors suggest our daily cholesterol should not exceed 300 mg.
The caffeine in chocolate is really minimal, and hardly has any effect. Compared to the average cup of instant coffee which contains 60 mg, chocolate only has around 10 mg, while a brewed cup of coffee could contain as much 100 mg.
If you want to treat yourself with a bar occasionally, whether it be as a reward or just a luxury, chocolate does not have to be a health risk. But if you are worried then a little bit of exercise afterwards should be able to get rid of that guilt you are feeling. A short walk a day is definitely worth it for a taste of a wonderful treat.
Many people who can’t eatChocolates due to dairy allergies, often find they have no problem with chocolate truffles.
