Living with BPH? Looking for non surgical solutions? Okay well you may have heard of a drug called Flomax. I mean how could you not? It’s been used to provide relief from BPH symptoms for some time now.
Flomax belongs to the group of alpha blocking drugs. By relaxing the muscles in the affected area around the prostate, they have been widely used to treat mild to moderate BPH. They act to relieve the symptoms of urgent urination without shrinking the prostate. That is left to so called enzyme inhibitors. And it works. Providing quick relief in as little as a day or two for some. Or within a week for most.
So what about those television ads that suggest Flomax is a well-established drug in the treatment of BPH? Can the hype be believed?
Well there are some nagging side effects associated with this drug you might want to be aware of. The most common being low blood pressure, fainting spells, dizziness, headache, stuffy nose and the like. However these usually diminish over time.
Moreover those already dealing with low blood pressure conditions should avoid Flomax altogether most likely.
A treatment combination of both alpha blockers and enzyme inhibitors would most likely be administered to those with extensive BPH. The degree of prostate enlargement often determines the strength and method of medication.
When it comes to identifying which drug is most cost effective Flomax may not be your best bet. Consider the generic alternative, Doxazosin. Drugs like these, though not as widely advertised, fall under the same category, are cheaper, and often are just as effective.
Flomax dominates the BPH market which has been growing fast due to the increasing number of BPH sufferers. In fact so much demand has been created that even those with only mild conditions have bought it. Yet too often other drugs which are just as effective in relieving the symptoms of prostate enlargement have been ignored. This impacts both national and personal health care costs.
Alright, now that you know some of the dirty little secrets about Flomax where do we go from here?
For one you can cut back on beverages containing caffeine and try to avoid alcohol. Don’t drink too much in the evening as this makes you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. If that doesn’t work well enough there is drug therapy. Discuss your options with your physician. Keeping in mind there are other drugs that provide the same relief yet do not deliver the same hit to your wallet.
