There is one excuse in the book that most dieters conveniently blame on the failure of their diet, and that is willpower. Some will argue that there’s no such thing – you either make a choice and stick to it, or you don’t.
Others feel willpower is a mystical component of ourselves guiding us in the choices we make. Or you may be one of those people who just thinks of willpower as another word – a word you use as your convenient excuse whenever you fall off the wagon and go back to unhealthy eating.
Let’s be realistic here – if you wake up at 2 in the morning looking for a midnight snack and grab that entire triple chocolate pie and not the apple that was right in front of you, that’s not willpower – that’s your decision and your accountability.
But these things happen and you shouldn’t feel too guilty about it. You may be holding yourself accountable for missing the mark with your diet, but that’s no reason for you to turn your back on your plan.
You need to find a happy medium in between the smooth road to a successful diet and the rocky road (no pun intended) to giving in to your temptations and ditching your diet.
Going back to the previous example, you may be tempted to eat some ice cream even if your diet doesn’t allow you to eat sweets. So instead of giving in to “willpower” and devouring that ice cream in just five minutes, how about getting a decent-sized scoop for yourself? Even if it’s a full slice it would be better than eight slices.
You need to give yourself leeway to miss the mark at times and bounce back stronger than ever. It’s a long road towards perfect dieting, so don’t be afraid to mess up every now and then.
Make sure that before you make any decisions (even those which mean you’ll steer off the dieting path temporarily), you take ample time to consider the consequences. Don’t rush into anything.
You can even work healthy foods into your diet just by giving quality time to think it over. We’re not programmed to think before we eat in today’s world. We’re usually on the go, in a hurry, or mindlessly doing other activities while we make eating decisions.
Don’t let willpower (or lack thereof) get the better of you. If you’re a mature adult who is responsible for your actions, then you should learn to live with your mistakes and celebrate success.
