Your mother, your high school health teacher, and the guys who make cereal advertisements for television have all told you countless times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, this time the cereal guys are right. Breakfast really is more important than any other meal of the day, whether you are looking for the best fat burning diet plan, if you want to keep your focus for the big meeting, or study for an exam.
Think about it: the last time you ate was probably no later than 8 or 9 pm the night before. This means that if you wait until noon or 1:00 pm to take a lunch break, you have gone 16 hours without filling the tanks, so to speak. Eating breakfast ensures that you have the energy you need to keep your focus and feel energized throughout the morning.
Food in the morning keeps your synapses firing. The nervous system and the brain need a constant supply of glucose for proper function. Without breakfast your memory, analytical ability and cognition may not function normally.
Breakfast prevents binge eating. When you skip breakfast, you naturally get very hungry before lunch time. Studies have shown that this encourages overeating and poor food choices – when you are excessively hungry, you are more likely to choose foods that are unhealthy and contribute to weight gain. Eating a healthy breakfast controls your hunger and has also been shown to limit stress eating.
Often times when people want to lose weight they think skipping breakfast will lower their caloric intake and lead to quicker weight loss. However, the opposite is more likely to occur. You must understand when the body senses a lack of food it goes into what is called starvation mode. This will down shift your metabolism to conserve fat stores until times are better.
By skipping breakfast, you slow your metabolism and inhibit your ability to use the calories that you consume, thereby leading to weight gain. By eating a sensible breakfast, you can kick-start your metabolism and improve your body’s fat-burning ability.
Are you concerned about which foods are best for breakfast when trying to lose weight? It is important that you find foods you actually like for breakfast when you are trying to lose weight. On the other hand, these should still be smart healthy choices. A pound of bacon, six donuts and a pot of coffee are not the best option. Instead, try some of the following:
Cereal whether hot or cold is always a good option, as long as it is the whole grain variety packed with nutrients and fiber. These will keep you going all morning long. Forget the cartoon endorsed sugar coma that comes with the highly advertised junk. Use unsweetened cereals and add a bit of sweet with fruit or honey.
Eggs: Finally, eggs have come out from under their bad reputation as cholesterol demons; this is actually a great food. Prepared correctly, poached or boiled, they are a heart healthy way to start the day and they are full of essential vitamins and protein. Whole grain toast and eggs is a nice breakfast.
Yogurt: How can you go wrong with this calcium rich food? Yogurt with a whole grain bagel or wheat toast is packed with healthy nutrients, plus it just tastes good.
Let your imagination be your guide when it comes to choosing breakfast food you like, it does not have to be the traditional fare most people eat. Look for food you enjoy that still conforms to a healthy fat burning diet, including those low in animal fat and refined sugar. If breakfast is just another chore you have to get through you are much less likely to stick to it, so go with stuff you enjoy eating but that is healthy.
