1. You gain body fat: Although protein has a high thermogenic effect, it is still easily stored as body fat when consumed in excess. Your body has all the necessary mechanisms to do this. So don’t think you can eat limitless quantities of protein and still get in shape.
2. You can lose too much calcium: When you eat more protein than your body needs you will start to excrete excessive amounts of calcium. And losing calcium is not a good thing because it can make your bones brittle and lead to other issues.
3. Your body will burn through lean tissues: In the absence of energy from carbs, your body will start to strip through lean muscle tissue for energy. So make sure you take this into account when trying to get in shape while preserving your metabolism.
4. Dehydration is more likely: Your muscles become dehydrated as protein intake goes up and carbohydrate intake goes down. Even worse, overall body hydration can go down. You see, your body needs seven times more water than carbs or fat to digest protein.
5. You can go into ketosis: If you completely eliminate carbs you will eventually go into ketosis. A state in which your body begins to run on alternative sources of fuel. Unfortunately, ketosis is very painful and can leave you feeling tired all the time.
6. You could stress your arteries: The main issue with protein is that it’s usually accompanied with saturated fat. So you have to be really selective here when eating protein. Do not buy into the recent push to eat Paleolithic-like diets.
