“Before” Photos Help With Weight Loss

ou’ve probably seen many ads for weight loss products with “before” and “after” photos. If you are just beginning your weight loss journey, you are probably unhappy with the way your body looks, so the idea of taking photos may be scary.

Although you might not want to look at photos of yourself right now, once you’ve lost a fair amount of weight, it’s good to look back on your progress. It’s nice to know how many pounds or inches you lost, but it’s even better to see your progress visually.

When you have lost a lot of weight and kept it off for a while, it’s easy to forget what you used to look like. It may seem hard to believe now, but it’s really true. In addition to a way of celebrating your progress, having those “before” photos can be handy to warn yourself against gaining the weight back.

You may be a little embarrassed to let others see the photos, and that’s normal. You don’t have to do that. Just keep them to yourself. Most cameras have self timers, so you don’t need another person to take the photos. With digital cameras, there’s no film to process, so nobody at a lab will see the photos, either.

You can dress however you like in the photos. If a swimsuit seems too uncomfortable, dress more modestly. The important thing is to take full-body photos, not just your head.

Many people who have lost lots of weight told me similar stories. When they started to lose weight, they wanted to forget the images of their larger selves. But once they got the weight off, they wished they had a better reminder of how much they had accomplished. They often regret not taking those photos, as if they lost part of their history.

Although it’s great to know you lost 50 pounds, actually having the photos to compare really drives the point home. After you’ve lost the weight, you might even find yourself eagerly showing off your earlier photos to show people how much weight you’ve lost.
