The long and twisted road to weight loss involves many things besides just eating better and working out on a regular basis. Anyone attempting this journey will more than likely need to go past the obvious adjustments that need to be made and go as far as making adjustments in all aspects of their life. If weight loss is going to become a lifestyle verses just a fad period of time in your life, how you view things mentally will need to be changed in regards to almost every decision you come across. Decisions small and large will now need to be made with the idea of how those decisions will affect your weight.
Any and all suggestions and advice should be sought after so that you are well equipped to face the challenges that rise and also to help you stay on track and hit your targets. In a previous article it was discussed how a simple yet effective way to implement taking stairs into your every day routines and habits over elevators and escalators could help you on your weight loss journey.
This article will expound on that idea so that you have another arrow in your quiver so to speak which will help you to keep on track and continue the long and rigorous process of getting to your ideal weight. There are many different ways you can begin to incorporate weight loss measures into your daily activities.
As previously stated taking stairs versus escalators and elevators is a great way to start. You can also incorporate exercise moves into daily household chores like lunges when you decided to do dishes or vacuum. Another usually overlooked way that someone can take a step towards helping them manage their weight better is to park far away every time (within reason) they go out.
This piece of advice probably seems contradictory to most people. And definitely when you consider the fact that battling over a parking space that’s close to where you’re trying to get especially during the holiday season is something that almost is ingrained in our DNA. Now before we go any further in this article it must be stated that parking far away should not always be enforced, if you’re a single woman late at night or in a bad neighborhood obviously staying as close to wherever you’re trying to get is the best course of action but otherwise park far away. By using sound judgment and good reasoning you should be able to determine when and where it is best to park far away.
When you stop for a moment and just think about other seemingly simple measures that people take to lose weight like walking a little bit each day to increase your metabolism, it doesn’t seem so ridiculous anymore this idea of parking far. Not all exercise has to be strenuous to have a bearing on your weight. But also consider the fact that this aspect would hopefully be combined with all the other things that you are doing, so that the small incremental steps that you take turn out to not be so small anymore but add up to something significant.
Suppose every day you go to work at an office building. You decide to park 12 spaces further away than where you normally park. With each space being a bit more than 8 feet apart you end up parking about 100 feet further per trip. Since you need to walk to work in the morning and back to your car in the evening that’s two trips at 100 feet more each giving you net of 200 feet more per day that you walked.
This of course is not even considering the fact that maybe you left for lunch which would then double the numbers again, but for now lets keep it simple. You work 5 days a week and which adds up to about 1,000 feet. More than likely though you go out at least 5 times per week to run errands, go to the grocery store, target, mall whatever it is you do. Each time you go out you do the same thing, one walk there and one back adding up each time to 200 additional feet 5 times per week. This would give you 2,000 extra feet of walking that you did each week!!…….still with me???
2000 feet of additional walking may seem to be a drop in the bucket, but think about how many feet go into a mile and that only 5280 feet equal one-mile. If you were to keep up the pace of parking far away for an entire year or 52 weeks walking an additional 2000 feet per week when you total it up over the course of a year it comes to somewhere near 104,000 feet or approximately 19.69 miles that you walked just by parking a little bit further.
Considering the fact that this case study is actually very conservative and that most people go out and run 15 to 20 errands per week and also drive to lunch the numbers are more than likely 5 to 10 times more than what’s been illustrated here. When you consider that you probably will be be tacking on some were near 100 miles in additional walking per year just by parking far away.
